Surface water cooling
The Illustrated Guide to Renewable Technologies BG 1/2008, By Kevin Pennycook, published by BSRIA in March 2008, states:
‘Surface water cooling involves pumping water from the sea, lakes or water courses and using it to provide some or all of a building’s cooling requirements. Such systems are open loop, where water is extracted, passed through a heat exchanger then returned to the water source. The cooled water from the heat exchanger can be used for a range of cooling purposes:
- Supplying cooling, via a heat exchanger, to fan coils, chilled ceilings or beams, or to a slab cooling system
- To pre-cool return chilled water prior to further cooling by other techniques
- As a source of cooled water for the condenser of a mechanical vapour compression chiller or absorption chiller
- As a heat source or sink for a heat pump.
During the winter the water can be used to pre-heat ventilation air.’
